Ok. Is anyone out there that in a post, can sum up the different typs of quial and the best use of each type. Meat, eggs, combo, when they lay, mature, ect.....

tks in advance to anyone that can do this.

i have a mix of quail. coturnix a&m and bobwhite. bobwhites can be mean and pick harshly on others. i love the a&m's and coturnix so far. they are mild mannered and fatten up rather nicely to eat. i have them for meat purposes. but will be breeding some to maintain my stock. some people really like eating their eggs. i have yet to try any. i am new to quail but it is going well so far. they are fun to watch and listen to. it is recommended that you keep each breed seperate. i hope this helps you to understand.

Just to clarify, coturnix and A&M are the same, just different variations of the same bird. The one I would choose if I were looking for a bird that lays a good amount of eggs early, and doesn't take forever to get to 'processing' age, I would go with coturnix. They can lay eggs as early as 5 weeks old, and are 'table ready' around 12 weeks old. Compared to bobwhites, which lay eggs about 24 weeks old and take about the same time to be 'table ready', I think coturnix would be your best bet

ETA: If you keep a light on them for 14 hours a day year-round, both coturnix and bobwhites 'should' lay eggs year-round.

OK.... REMEMBER, YOU ASKED FOR IT!

BUTTON QUAIL--- ARENT THEY PURTY! (UM THATS PRETTY MUCH IT FOR THESE)

COTURNIX QUAIL--- (all types) THESE ARE PRETTY MUCH THE ROACHES OF THE QUAIL WORLD--- THEY HATCH IN 16-18 DAYS AND SEXUALLY MATURE IN MOST CASE BY ABOUT 6 WKS OF AGE, REACH MAX SIZE IN MOST CASES BY 12 WKS OF AGE. THESE ARE PRODUCTION BIRDS--- BOTH MEAT AND EGGS! A COTURNIX HEN UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS CAN PRODUCE UPWARDS OF 300 EGGS A YEAR! THEY ARE BY FAR THE MOST DOCILE QUAIL SPECES AVAILABLE HERE IN THE US. THEY ARE QUIET, HARDY, AND DO WELL IN CAPTIVITY AND REQUIRE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SPACE PER BIRD OF ANY QUAIL SPECES.

BOB WHITE QUAIL----( ALL TYPES) THESE ARE THE JUNKYARD DOGS OF THE QUAIL WORLD--- THEY HATCH IN 23-25 DAYS AND GROW TO TABLE SIZE IN 24+ WKS. THEY ARE BY FAR THE MOST TASTY OF ALL QUAIL SPECES

THEY ARE DIFFICULT IN CAPTIVITY REQUIRING LARGE AMOUNTS OF SPACE PER BIRD. THEY ARE SPASTIC AND HIGH SPIRITED. THE AVERAGE BOB HEN WILL LAY 1 OR 2 CLUTCHES OF EGGS A YEAR VARING FOR 12-25 EGGS PER CLUTCH. SOME SPECES WILL LAY YEAR ROUND IF KEPT UNDER LIGHTS--- BUT MANY WILL NOT! THEY ARE SEASONAL BREEDERS--- LATE SPRING THRU SUMMER.

GAMBELS QUAIL--- PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS THE BOBS, BUT MORE SPASTIC AND LESS MEAN TO EACH OTHER. THEY ARE TASTY, BUT A LIL EXPENSIVE AND HARD TO COME BY FOR EATING....

VALLEY QUAIL---SEE GAMBELS ABOVE( DIFFERENT BIRD, SAME CHARICTERISTICS)

BLUE SCALE--- 1/2 WAY BETWEEN BOBS AND GAMBELS--- A LIL MEANER THAN GAMBELS AND VALLEYS, BUT NOT AS MEAN AS BOBS. SAME TIME SCHEDULE FOR GROW OUT AND BREEDING

MONTEZUMA (MEARNES)QUAIL--- DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! THE PRICE IS ASTRONOMICAL AT BEST! THEY ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT SPECES AVAILABLE IN THE US TO RAISE AND KEEP REQUIRING DIFFICULT AND EXACTING CONDITIONS TO FLOURISH=== THESE ARE ORNIMENTAL QUAIL AT THIS TIME

THAT PRETTY MUCH COVERS THE MOST AVAILABLE QUAIL SPECES HERE IN THE US...... THERE ARE OTHERS AVAILABLE, BUT THESE WOULD BE ORNIMENTALS EVEN MORE SPECIALIZED THAN MONTEZUMAS. HOPE THIS HELPS!

P.S.=== THESE STATEMENTS ARE GENERALIZED FOR THE SAKE OF A BASIC ANSWER TO THE OP!!!!

hello shelleyd! i am still learning myself about quail and i try not to give incorrect info to anyone. i knew they were basically the same but didnt know that they were the exact same. everything i have ever read or been told they have been said to be differant breeds. i like the coturnix best myself because they mature fast! thank you for helping out with corrections on what i said. my coturnix are trying to mate already and they havent even started laying yet.

i have a big question about quail! i hope this isnt taboo on here. but how do you cull them? is it the same as chickens? they are just so tiny im afraid we may make a mistake.

Go to the top of the quail page and there is a sticky on quail. Open that and look until you find the processing thread. That should help you allot. There is also a video on u-tube on how to process quail.
