Can anyone tell me can you bath a rooster / hen?

I just gave my rooster a bath and noticed he was having labored breathing. I have noticed he has always been a loud breather and would sit down alot so I wonder if there was an under lying condition. I really don't know anything about roosters or how they should sound. I used baby shampoo and only a little water to get the poop out of his feathers. When I was drying him off I noticed he was breathing hard and putting his head down. He wasn't difficult to bathe but I think it may have stressed him too much. I feel terrible because we don't have any vets open Sunday that would see him and no one at the feed store could tell me what to do. I thought if I put him in a quiet place and left him alone he would calm down. But he ended up dying. I feel terrible and wonder if I caused it by giving him a bath. After this experience I would not recommend bathing a rooster in water, the most I would do is wipe him off with a wet towel only if he is tame.
