I bought a few hens two weeks ago and felt very sorry for them. They were in pretty poor condition when I got them but could not leave them where they were. Two days or so after buying them one turned her neck funny and started walking backwards a lot... She was eating ok but about three days ago I found her near death. I Started giving her red cell water with a little peanut butter in it and vitamin E oil and feeding it per syringe. She would just flop and roll around. Yesterday she tried to stand up some and even made it to the waterer on her own.

My question is how long will it take or will she ever get better? Anything else I can do for her? Any suggestions? She is just a pet but I just can't stand to see an animal treated so bad without trying to help. I guess that is the nurse in me...

Thank you for any suggestions!

It sounds like she could have wry neck, which is actually a symptom of other problems such as vitamin deficiency, some diseases such as Mareks or lymphoid leukosis, some severe respiratory disease, head injury, or any condition that can affect the brain. I would treat her for dehydration and vitamin deficiency with vitamins and electrolytes in the water, and give some scrambled egg and a little buttermilk with their normal feed. Here is some info on wry neck (torticolis, crook neck:) http://www.browneggblueegg.com/Article/Crookneck/Crookneck.html
