I do love a blue hen, but I need some with a small comb. Pea comb maybe or a rose or walnut comb. Big combs like yours has would suffer frostbite here.Thank you. She was a total surprise. When I got her I was told she was a Blue Star Hybrid.
I live on the East Coast so I'm concerned too. I bought vetermycin and will inspect daily. My RIR and Marans have large combs. They have always done well in the winter. I have daily contact with them and we'll ventilated coops. Here's a photo of my blue girl crew.I do love a blue hen, but I need some with a small comb. Pea comb maybe or a rose or walnut comb. Nice! I have feeders they have to stick their heads in (3" PVC pipes). He also got frostbite on his wattles from drinking from an open bucket. Not sure how to solve that. They are all too old to train to drink from nipples.I live on the East Coast so I'm concerned too. I bought vetermycin and will inspect daily. My RIR and Marans have large combs. Really? Mine, they pick and peck at everything, especially if it's new. Id try hanging the bucket out with the water valves on the bottom and just let them see it, soon enough they will poke at them, or see one of them brush up against the valve, it opens and water drips, they see the drip then poke it to see, it drops more water.. oh hey this is a water thing...Nice! No heat. May get heated bases for the buckets. If you have any sort of heat in the coop, try aiming it somewhat that direction to help keep it from freezing. If not, well try to keep it out of the wind, in the sun or whatever you can and hope for the best.
