I cannot take credit for knowing this already and thought the same as you until I googled it.

Actually there is only the New Hampshire. The "Red" part in the name is from hatcheries, since they often cross them with Rhode Island Reds.


Look it up in the American Poultry Association - Only the New Hampshire.

Websites all around call them New Hampshire Reds because 90% of all New Hampshires are hatchery based. True, heritage New Hampshires are VERY rare.
