Can Anyone Tell Me What Breed This Is?

Wheaton game hen. Sussex should have white/pink legs.

Plus, pretty much any time a bird "just shows up", game is a good guess

. They're scrappy little things, great foragers and good mommas.

Agreed.

Games usually have a lot of personality, as you're seeing. :) Smart too.

Umm, might not be so pleasant to hear.. games are historically and still are used in fighting. You'd think it would mean they are aggressive to everything and everyone but a well bred and handled Game is very tame, very handable- even toddlers could pick them up. A point of controversy, some games do turn out "man fighters"- attacking people.. people are divided on it being genetic or nuture(I think genetics PLUS nuture) and generally they are looked down on and culled out.. They need to be very handleable, for training, excerising and taking out to "events". All of that while still being what's called "dead game"- a natural urge to do damage/kill another chicken and absolutely not backing down from a challenge from another chicken in particular and being slow or unable to 'forgive' after a fight. As a side effect, even the hens can be very aggressive towards each other- full on serious fights.

So with that... how she is with different species of birds is not a reliable indicator of how she will be with another chicken- after all they were mainly bred to be highly aggressive in a rather specific way.

It's completely up to you to try another hen, have her alone or introduce companions via eggs or day old chicks, figured you would like to know there were more than two options..

Thanks so very much for the helpful info. I've been reading up on Games so I'm not surprised to hear that. We may just let her be the one and only, very doted on, spoiled hen ; ) Besides, she does have our 4 dogs and 1 cat to keep her company!

Allrighty. Glad you're making an informed decision. :)

be aware she will have very strong urge to go broody- they are one of the most broodiest chickens. Keep removing eggs...
