I went out to take care of our chickens yesterday and found one of our hens with this red blob coming out of it's butt. It looks like there is an egg in there. I have never seen this before. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with it?

I haven't either and I have raised chickens for almost 15 years and have never had this happen. She seems to be fine except for that red blob.

She has a prolapse of her vent (cloaca.) Keep her vent clean and prevent the red tissue to dry out, since it can die. Apply honey or Preparation H cream to reduce swelling. Then try to push it back inside. It may keep coming back out, but hold it in a few minutes with you hand. Reduce the protein in her feed, place her in a dark or covered cage for 16 hours a day until she stops laying eggs. This may take a few day. Make sure that she is getting enough calcium or oyster shell in her diet. Check to see that she doesn't have an egg stuck, and that she is able to pass droppings. A daily bath to her vent area in epsom salts may help. Some of these hens may keep prolapsing part of the bowel, and need to be put down. She has a good chance of success, but it will require a lot of your time. Good luck, and let us know if you need help.

It does look and feel like there is an egg in there in part of the red blob. How woukd you go about getting the egg out or knowing if it is actually an egg. I don't want to hurt her. She doesn't seem to be in any pain right now. This is her first tI'm laying an egg.

Try to find the vent opening, snd don't be afraid to gently insert a finger into the opening to feel for an egg, and to make sure the vent is open for droppings to come out. Use lubricant, such as K-Y or vegetable oil, and if you feel an egg, try to pry it out. A warm bath and some massaging can also help. If there is an egg, give her a calcium tablet, a Tums, or some ground egg shells in some Yogurt or feed.

The egg that is stuck seems to be at an awkward angle and I haventered had any luck getting the egg to come out. It seems to be getting worse. I don't want her to suffer but we also would like to save her if possible

Try soaking her in a warm bath, and keep trying to manipulate the egg to turn it. Use lubricant and rubber glove. If you have an emergency vet hospital locally or an avian vet, I would get her seen if possible. Vets can remove the egg with a vaccuum device or break the egg and remove it. Giving her fluids, calcium( (just once) and the bath may help. Good luck, and let us know what happens.
