But I have doubts about the RIR part - although it could be a hatchery bird. It may be a production red "breed" male - but I am no expert on production reds.
Ok thank you for answering that one. Maybe you can tell me how to tell??? so I can make sure that my (I think White Leghorns) are girls?? We adopted them back in July. From some friends that could no longer keep them due to city ordinance laws and complaining neighbors. Here is a pic of them.
From those pictures, the Leghorns all look like girls, to me. The red's legs and feet are so huge, it HAS to be a male. It does look a little "rangy" for an RIR, though. Do you know how old he is?
The best we can figure from what the previous owner said he is about 3 - 4 months old. We are also basing that off his size compared to the Leg Horn's who are about 6mo. But from what the previous owner told us both his Mom and Dad are RIR's with papers. But we have definitely been wondering too thats why I am asking. I am totally new to this and really not sure!!!
By the way, what do you mean when you say "Rangy"?? my chicken vocab is very limited!!!

I think they mean he has probably been cross bred or one of his parents has been. He doesn't look like a purebred RIR. But he is a pretty one. Looks like you're right about his age though.
