I have 6 chickens, right at about 6 months old. They have never had any health problems until recently. I have one girl specifically that I am so worried is on her last leg. Little bit about her---she is a white leghorn, 6 mo old. On a layer feed diet with oyster shells and grit mixed in. They also roam our yard daily for sometimes hours on end.
We had a couple hot days in a row, on days like those I have been giving them rooster booster in their water along with a bunch of ice and frozen veggies. This seems to keep them cool. On Tuesday night (Sept 4th) I noticed that one of my girls was just sort of slumped over in the coop. I immediately brought her inside, assuming she may have gotten heat exhaustion. Gave her some electrolytes, kept her in a cool place to cool off. Next morning she seemed to be doing ok, but not much better. Cleaned out her water dish, gave her fresh electrolyte mix.
Day 2, she is still not doing any better, hasn't pooped as far as I know, but she had drank a little bit of water while my husband was watching her. Figured that was a good sign. We take her outside to see if she will walk around and enjoy the night air a bit, she finally poops! Its super watery and green with white in it. Pretty normal minus the watery part! Take her back in, try and give her some more water mix, she doesn't want to drink. I figure she is tired.
Day 3, something is definitely wrong. She isn't acting normal and by now she should be cooled off and ready to go back out, but she isn't. She is CONSTANTLY wanting to sleep. Can't keep her eyes open to save her life. I have been holding her a lot mostly because I want to make sure she is still breathing. She has stopped eating (and as far as I know at this point hasn't eaten since I took her out of the coop). Her comb is starting to turn pale, and the ends are a really dark red, almost hard.
I get her some Corid from TSC, hoping this might help. Gave her a dose that I actually found on here to help against Coccia. I have no idea if that is whats going on at this point but I needed to try anything.
As of this morning (Day 4) I have resorted to giving her wet cat food and hard boiled eggs which I have pureed into a liquid with the corid mix. I had put electrolytes in the mix to begin with, but made a new batch without them just incase they reacted with the Corid somehow.
She is not doing well. She keeps falling asleep, she won't open her eyes and I am so afraid that she is going to be dead soon. I don't know what else to do, short of taking her to the vet and spending hundreds of dollars on her.
Side note- one of our chickens did eat a toad about a week or 2 ago. I don't recall which one got it, but I am wondering if she was the one that got is and maybe the toad had a parasite. Her poop as of a couple hours ago is yellow, watery, and has green in it also.
Is there any saving her?
