I recently started looking for ways to reduce our feed costs. One suggestion I found and am working on is an edible landscape. Yesterday I discovered black cherry trees growing in our yard. Are they safe for the chickens? I also found a service berry tree and read that those are safe for them to eat. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have several wild cherry trees growing around the property, and, at least here in my neck of the woods, the fruit is few and far between, and consists of a large pit, with a very thin "cherry" layer on top.

The pits, leaves, and stems contain cyanide, and should NOT be messed with unless proper precautions are taken. :sick

That being said, I harvest what cherries I can, along with cherry bark to make medicinal concoctions such as cough syrup. Certain procedures MUST be followed, so please don't try this at home without proper instruction.

I'm not too familiar with service berry, but I'm pretty sure those are a choice edible.
