Can chickens hold in their eggs without going eggbound?

Probably a stupid question, but can chickens hold in their eggs inside their bodies? When they don't lay due to outside heat or whatever reason, can they hold their eggs inside then? Or do the hens stop the egg process before the egg is developed?
