Can Chickens Swim ?

My neighbor has an old bathtub she uses for water out in her field and she has had a hen drown. Has also found another one in time to get it out and save it.

She has non-stick things on the rims now and that helps.

I have had a couple of young chickens drown in the duck's water bowl. One I found in time, just sitting in the water shivering and miserable. He would have drowned soon enough had I not rescued him.

This is true. A co-worker had a chicken that had mated with a duck and produced an egg that hatched into a chicken with webbed feet. The bird was around for a couple of years. One day it fell into a cow pond and when they found it had drowned so I guess the answer would be no they can't swim. I have asked her for a picture and she said she would look for one but I haven't seen her as I have been out of work for awhile as I have been diagnosed with cancer.

When my birds were young, I had them in my bathtub as a brooder. One day, we left the toilet seat open. And the shower curtain wasn't pulled back as tightly as it usually was...

But thank goodness we have a shallow-sloped bowl. We came home to a soaked and disheveled young pullet standing in the toilet.

Poor girl! But after a quick rinse and drying with a towel, back under the heat lamp, and she was fine!

I haven't seen much more miserable-looking than a soaked chicken...
