Can Chicks Be Ups'ed?????

My uncle (who works for UPS) was really upset when I told him that I had my chicks shipped to me via USPS. I told him that UPS doesn't ship chicks. He told me I had to be wrong. After an hour of phone calls, he still refused to concede defeat. Finally after a gazillion no's, someone higher up told him that he could have a whole bunch of chicks palletized, but that was the only way they consider it.

He then asked me how many chicks it would take to fill up a pallet. With my hands I showed him the dimensions that my 20 chicks came in (you know one of those small boxes). He looked bewildered and said "I'm sorry but UPS doesn't ship chickens."

Day old chicks have a yolk. They can go 2 or 3 days w/o food or water & be fine. Older chicks can't go that long. They will die. The post office will ship them w/o question but you cannot add food or water to the box. So shipping older birds is very stressfull for them.

There are jells you can squirt into the box that will help.

I had a bunch of older birds shipped to me & most were dead on arrival. Don't put more than 1 or 2 in a box (depending on age). Mine were 6 weeks old & he put 6 in a box. They suffocated - only 2 survived because they could poke thier beaks out the holes in the box.

In short - it can be done - but honestly the $50 - $75 it will cost isn't worth it for me.

USPS - day old chicks can be shipped priority mail. Anything older has to be sent via express shipping and it's gonna base run you around $50, depending on weight and ship to location. You'll also need a proper shipping container/box.

Whats funny is, USPS contracts with FedEx to ship express lives.

I've had adults shipped to me. With proper care, healthy birds, don't cram the box full of birds, and they ship just fine. Usually one bird per box. In your case, depending on the size of those 6 week olds, probably should have only been two per box.
