DE can supposedly be added to chicken feed (2 lbs. or so of DE to 50 lbs. of feed) but I'm wondering whether this includes the chick starter, too. Even if I store their feed in metal garbage cans, insects can still hatch out from eggs in the feed, right? Is this stuff safe for chicks to ingest or should I wait til their older?

I add a little bit (probably a 1/2 teaspoon) to a feeder full of feed for my week old chicks. No problems so far. But you may want to wait and see if anyone else comments. I'm no expert and there are people here who know way more about DE than I do.

The perfect person to ask about this is Dawn419. She is the biggest DE expert I know on here! Look her up on the user list and send her a PM.

Gindee, that's exactly what I was thinking of doing. Opened up my parakeet's seed container this morning and there was a moth! Guess I'll put it in his feed, too! Gumpsgirl, I'll take your advice. BTW, I read how you got your screenname. Way cute!
