Our 2 year old drake named Colonel isn't like other drakes. He's not overly horny and doesn't mate our ducks like crazy. And yes, I do know this as our ducks are quite loud when he mates them so I can always hear them when they do the deed.
Anyway, our ducks took a short 2 week break because the weather was throwing them off. Colonel didn't mate with them at all during this time. 2 days ago I heard them breeding and figured he felt like doing it until I found an egg today in the nesting box.
Duchess is a 2 year old Indian Runner while Kaeda is a 1 year old Indian Runner.
Colonel is a Khaki Campbell.
Currently I switch the females around. One day they're with the 8wk old ducklings and another day they're out with Colonel.

Can drakes sense when their females are laying and when they stop???

I don't think so but I can see where you are getting that idea. My Cayuga drake also seems to only mate with his ladies when they are about to lay the next day. They lay an egg every day for like a week and then stop and then he mates them AGAIN after like 2 weeks and the cycle goes on and on.
