I am a city slicker that has moved to the country, so pleae bare with me.

I have been raising fancy ducks the last couple of years, and someone just brought me a rooster. We are in the process of building a chicken coop. I will have my rooster, and plan on getting him a couple of chicks, so he will not be lonely.

My question is, can you have chickens and ducks in the same pen.

They can live together just fine under certain circumstances. You need to make sure that the ducks will not get the chicks to wet. There was a really good article in backyard poultry magazine. I recommend you look there.

By the way, this is the wrong section of the forum.

I had grown ducks, chickens, and turkeys all living together, but I don't recommend it... the ducks dabble constantly, which fouls the water. I was changing the water twice a day, and it was still muddy most of the time. And it saturates the surrounding ground, which is another mess to deal with.

I have ducks, chickens and geese all staying in the same coop. This is only at nighttime though to keep them secure. They free-range the rest of the day. The chickens all perch and the ducks and geese stay on the ground. I also don't feed or give them water in there. It works out pretty well for me.

It just depends on the breeds. I have call duck in with my bantam leghorn great match. I have Kahki Campells in with my standard cochins great match. I tryed putting muscovy ducks in with my mottle houdans it didn't work. I tryed putting MD in with my turkeys it didn't work. I tryed putting them in with my guineas it didn't work either. I hope that helps.

I had a pair of call ducks in with my banties and they did great to a certain extent, they went after the troublesome roosters and left the good roos alone, the hen loved to snuggle with the chickens and the drake was wonderful for breaking up any fights among the flock, however they are SOOOOOO messy!!!
