I have been wanting emus for a while, and recently read a list of things to be cautious of and one that stuck out for me is acorns. my yard is half covered by huge oak trees that produce tons of them. will this be a problem for raising emus?

have plenty of oaks in /around my pens, no problems except when the fall and hit the fence !
Birds eat the acorns and just pass them through whole for the most part, never had any toxicity issues .

According to Red Oak Farms's list of plants that are dangerous to emus, acorns will cause bloody diarrhea, excessive thirst and urination. That being said, I know an emu farmer who has his birds fenced in a woodsland which contains oak trees. The birds quickly learned not to eat the the acorns. So, while acorns are apparently not deadly to emus, they can have a toxic effect. http://www.redoakfarm.com/dangerousplants.htm

I know that I have peach trees in one of my emu enclosures and the same list claims that peach "pits stems and leaves reported to cause convulsions, respiratory failure and death", but I have never had a health problem in any of the birds in that pen and that pen has been utilized for several years.

It could be that some types of oaks are more toxic than other per the tannic acid
I guess but I can assure you, my birds have tons of acorns all around them and I've never had any problems in over 20 years of raising them in that area and see acorns in their poo often.
Guess it would be prudent to see if some varieties of oaks are more toxic than others.
Can't remember if we have 'red' oaks in our pens or not but know we do have white ones there.
I have peach trees in some of my pens also, never a problem there either.

Yeah I usually trust the animals to know what they are doing. I have a lot of oak trees scattered around my property and I've seen a lot of (mostly undigested) acorns in my Emus scant at times but no ill effects.

Ive only had one instance of animals getting sick by eating something growing in the pasture, and that was goats eating too much Brazilian pepper tree, made them throw up. Brazilian pepper tree is a horrible and noxious/invasive tree anyways so it and the smaller ones are all gone now for good.
