Hi, I am planning to keep 6-7 coturnix quails on my roof for eggs only but is worried about the noise that males make. My neighbours' houses are very close to mine.. If I only keep 6-7 females in a 56" long enclosure, what do you think will happen? Will there be fights? I have heard somewhere that males are needed in a colony to establish order but don't know if that is true..

Thanks!

That seems like a good amount of space for that number of quail. Like chickens, quail hens can work things out without a rooster. My advice is to get all of your birds at the same time, and ideally from the same source and the same age, to prevent territorial behavior. You can also include some hiding places and obstacles to give them options to get away from each other and to make the environment more stimulating to them. Watch closely for aggression, because in the bird world they all gang up on injured birds. It's a good idea to have another cage for time-outs if you have a bully.
