can food coloring be used inside bator to determine how much water is

That is a brilliant idea. I can't see how it could possibly hurt unless it stains the trough permanently...then you are stuck with a false high water level mark. Of course, as the water evaporates, the color will stay so you probably only have to add it one time.

Yep, I did it on every incubation (those days are gone now, long story, wife thing). In a styrofoam one it does stain, but really that is what you want any how.

Great minds think alike. Never had a problem with the method, oh a problem with the wife yes, method no.

Ya know, to this day she has never told me where the incubator went to ......

I tried it in my Genesis 1588. Food coloring turned the water a dark blue; then when I added more water, it too turned blue so it didn't help. I've since learned to fill the center well the first day, then every three days add 3/8 cup (3 ounces) of water. That seems to work great; however, occasionally the humidity drops below 50% and I have to add 3/8 cup after 2 1/2 days instead of three to keep it between 50% and 55% humidity.

DH hid cat food from me once - so I would not feed the strays (we now have a dog who eats cats - stray problem or any cat problem fixed

I was thinking about food coloring this AM as I was scrunched over the bator looking at the well.

OK, here is my ding-bat idea, but it works for me...
I have some little plastic beads, really small with no hole, that came out of an old toy. I just float a few on the water in the wells. If I tap the incubator gently they will bob around and I know there is water in. Since depth of the water doesn't really matter, just surface area, I know which well to put the water in if the beads don't bob.

I am just looking for ways to increase my hatch rate! I refill water by using a syringe with an air hose hooked to end so as not to open bator!
I am making sure temps are stable before placing eggs in! I have the turner on in my bedroom trying to keep eggs cool enough while waiting for the ones in the mail!
Come on USPS!

I dont use food coloring but I use colored tubing that runs under my wire into the fill up trays. The tubing is aqua colored and it helps me see that the tubing is 'seated' into the wells and I can see the water better as well. If you put plastic shelf liner over the wire during the actual hatch, it kinda blocks everything though, on the LGs anyways.
