can geese be protecters?

Your birds will not stand a chance if you don't provide them with some protection. I believe that you need to address your animals' safety before acquiring them, not complain afterward when they have been killed. Wildlife need to eat too and it is not fair to blame them or kill them when they come across free-ranging birds and take advantage of the situation. If you don't have enough time or money to build a simple fence, you probably don't have the money to take care of your animals. Look on craigslist for materials--you could even use large branches for posts. All you need are posts and wires to at least try to give them a chance. I had part of my fence blow down in my back acre and a coyote took two of my pet sheep--they both had horns and loved to butt each other HARD. That means nothing to a coyote. I didn't blame the coyote--she was feeding pups at the time. I only blame myself for not fixing the fence sooner. Animals in your care depend solely on you for protection and you have an obligation to provide it to them. If you have raccoons, you will need to cover the top of a pen as well.

My geese are useless as predator protection. A hawk could land on their head and they probably wouldn't notice. They first three days they were here they alerted to aerial predators. Now they only honk when they see me coming with Honey Buzzer cereal for them. But they make great lawn ornaments!

I totally agree with chickless - I have 12 geese, Embdens and Toulouse, I also have 46 Chickens, 14 ducks, 8 Guinea Fowl and 2 Goats and I would not leave any of them to fend for themselves especially overnight, yes they can all make a lot of noise if a predator is around but they are defenseless against foxes and the birds can easily be taken by eagles - I witnessed an eagle pick up one of my Muscovy Ducks, fortunately the eagle dropped her back into the water and she swam back to me unharmed - I have seen deer killed nearby by foxes - it is your responsibility to ensure your birds are protected - even my dogs aren't a deterrent for a hungry predator.... please don't depend upon any source other than yourself to protect your animals.
Best wishes
Suzie
