can hens crow???

I just got home with my new hen.... She is gorgeous! sooo excited and she crowed

is this possible? thats not even the worst part... i have 2 other hens ive been waiting on to lay there first egg and then THEY started crowing.... when i bought them, they were ALL suppose to be hens.

Funny girls! Oh yeah...hens can crow and they do! Your girls just wanted to let the new one know that she had nothing on them!

post some pictures, you've probably got roos if they're not laying.

I have heard of rare cases of hens crowing, and even rarer cases of gyandromorphs (half female half male chicken split down the middle) that crows.

Folks keep saying that hens crow. I know it's possible, but in six years of owning chickens, I've never had one single hen who crowed. I bet you have roosters. Some dastardly sellers take advantage of unsuspecting buyers that way.

Well I am here to say that I have had several of my hens crow. It is a different crow than rooster's crow though. It is a shorter crow and not as loud. Sometimes I thought it was a scream, but when I 'seen' them do it I knew it was a deliberate crow.

The millie fleur D Uccle hen, 2nd to left, has been crowing for the past couple of months now. I think you could describe a rooster crow as a melody and a hen crow as a one or two sylable loud noise. or attempt.

This was a very cold day the day this picture was taken. Thus the red heat lamp and cold looking chickens.

None of my hens crow just make sounds.

I've had three hens crow. Last month my five year old Belgian D'Uccle crowed and I had a White Leghorn bantam that lived for about 13 years and she crowed many times when she got older.

And yes I have also seen them do it. I used to sneak up on my little Leghorn and she would crow three of four times. they sound like a young cockerel.

One of my BR hens would crow. It sounded more like a harsh "AHRGH-AHRRRGH!" kind of noise.

Yeah like when youput your tongue on the roof of your mouth and make a trilling sound, , but with a very low hoarse throat sound.
