Morning all,
I have a flock which consisted of two polish frizzles, 2 silkies & 2 seabrights.
All bought as females, thou breeder say she couldn't guarantee the polish ones where for 100% sure.
Turns out one of them was a roo....a very vocal roo at that, so we sadly took him back on Monday to his breeder- broke my heart, we had him16weeks and grew very attached, but my neighbours did not enjoy him chatting to them every half hour in the day! ;)
Yesterday morning I went out to let girls out and from inside a coop came a very strange noise, not a crow but like a strangled attempt/come " oi you just stood on me" noise they make when they jump about on each other. Then when she came out she did a really strange crow type noise...
Now they are 23 weeks old and in the 8 weeks we kept the other roo in an attempt he'd calm down on his crowing , never once has this bird made any noise???
Nothing rest of day or this morning either?
any ideas? Can hens crow.... Or do I have another roo on my hands :(
Thanks in advance :yiipchick

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Sorry your silkie turned out to be a roo you couldn't keep. I've read that silkies especially are difficult to sex.

Sometimes you will run into a hen that crows. I don't believe it doesn't happen often but it does happen, especially if there isn't a rooster on the premises.

I have a bantam Cochin that had started after our rooster was strangled by a black snake. She makes low crowing sounds all the time. She never shuts up!!! Thank goodness she's not loud enough to effect the neighbors !
