Q: Can hens REALLY crow? A: Yes! It's not even that rare, either! In all-female flocks, or flocks in which the ratio of females to males is greater than 10:1, in many cases one female will take on male characteristics and become the "protector" of the rest of the flock. In addition to coming out with a half-crow, she'll usually cease laying, and she may even develop spurs to rival a male's. Strange, but true!

this is from www.mypetchicken.com I copied and pasted it. I wanted to see what you guys think/thought. I just could not believe it, it's so amazing/interesting/weird. i never even heard of it till a few min ago when I went on the website. this is from the FAQ section i think.

I have a hen that will crow, but rarely and it softer than a rooster. I've heard that sometimes hens have spurs.

Imp- It's a weird world made weirder by chickens

I have a friend with four hens: three BR and one BA. She told me that one of them crows. Now I'm curious which one it is.

Is it more common in some breeds than others?

I had a dominant red sex link hen that had the most gross crow. (We had just rehomed a roo when it started) We had to rehome her too!

None of my hens have ever crowed. We don't keep roos, but we have had a couple that crowed for a week or so before they got to the chopping block.
