do you all sell your chickens/chicks? is that why you all set so darn many?

Hubby wants to incubate a lot starting next spring..but honestly; we'd have mix chicks...

we dont have seperate places to keep the diff. breeds of birds...

and if you DO sell; what do you get per bird for your breed?

TIA for your info..

I do sell a lot of chicks, but I hatch a lot because I need to be able to raise up several to where I can start to see what kind of quality I'm getting and then get rid of those that don't make the cut. BUT we show our birds, so.....

As far as pricing, when I was selling mutt chicks as day olds, they went for $3 each. My pure bred chicks from my current flock go for $5-8 each as day old straight run. Once they start getting old enough to sex, and see some of what quality they are going to have, the price moves from there.

I raise just a barn yard variety and the last bunch I sold I got $11.00 each. My first bunch of chickens were given to me and they were just a mixed batch, personally I like the mixed seems that they are more hardy, disese tollerant and such. But I know alot of people go with specific breeds.

There are several reasons people hatch alot.

1) It's addicting
2) Flock massacre and a need to replace
3) Older hens not laying so much so circulating the flock
4) Selling chicks
5) Raising pure bred hens and roos for selling of hatching eggs
6) Been hired to incubate by someone with no bator
7) Demand for eggs is high (this is the case around here. I cannot keep up with the demand so I am hatching more layers)

The reasons can vary far and wide.
