Just a thought jhm47, they didn’t have pellets a long time ago for them and also God didn’t create pellets for them at creation I’m sureAlfalfa is OK to feed as an occasional treat, but to force your birds to eat it is counterproductive. Alfalfa has far too much non-digestable fiber in it to be considered a good feed source for birds. Yes, it has fairly high protein levels, and it does contain some other vitamins and minerals that the birds can use, but it is woefully low in energy. The birds need a concentrated form of energy (such as corn or some other high starch source) to grow, maintain their body weight, and produce eggs.
Feed alfalfa to your goats, sheep, cows, or horses. Their digestive systems are designed to eat grass and hay. Let the chickens eat layer feed. It's fully balanced for them to produce eggs efficiently.
