can I get a clear answer? how long to toss eggs after using Duramycin?

It wasn't a wormer, it was an antibiotic. The information on the drug says not to be used in poultry whose eggs are to be used for human consumption. Period. Tis probably means that it isn't FDA approved for use in laying hens. However, according to research, Tetracycline is excreted in eggs for 6-11 days after oral dosing for 5-7 days and Oxytetracycline for 9 days. http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~db=all~content=a907632520

So
this would indicate a 2 week waiting period would be sufficient. IMHO I would not be afraid to eat the eggs after this time. I don't know where this leaves you on selling eggs.

Would anyone on this thread be afraid to eat the eggs during the administration of either an antibiotic or a wormer to your chickens? I would be kinda scared to eat the eggs.

Do you think that there would be any kind of reaction? With a wormer, do you think that dead worms or any other intestinal parasites is in the eggs when the eggs are layed? I wonder if the scientists have done studies on this. What do you all think?

When they give you a period of time to wait before eating the eggs/meat they have done studies evaluating how long the medication can be found in the meat or egg in a significant amount, then they add some time to be on the safe side. If the studies aren't done, they cannot recommend eating the eggs/meat after using the drug. The worms or parasites are not in the eggs, it is the medication they do not want you unintentionally and unnecessarily exposed to.

I don't know if this matters at all.....but I used an antibiotic on a hen and then incubated 10 of the eggs and they all hatched! So....maybe hatch 'em if you don't wanna toss 'em

. That makes sense to me. Thanks for breaking it down for me. I have a clearer understanding now. I was under the assumption that worms and parasites would be in the eggs.

I know that when we cooked the eggs and chopped them up while the birds were on the wormer meds, they did have a different smell to them. but our dogs didn't seem to mind at all. and hey maybe it helped to rid them of any little wigglers that would be in there system. I will wait a couple extra days before selling them, but I think for us, they should be fine. I wasn't crazy about giving them antibiotics in the first place, but then again I wasn't keen on possibly losing some or all of my flock like others on the site have. I think we will start eating them this weekend. I stopped treatment last wednesday so this weekend we should be good and by monday I will be ready to sell!

As with most wormers, antibiotics should have a withdrawal period. I wouldnt give eggs to other animals neither. It may not hurt them now, but later down the road if your dog needs an antibiotic...a regular type antibiotic may not have any effect on the bacteria, resulting in a stronger dose of a different more expensive antibiotic due to immunity buildup from the bacteria. It's always important to seperate an ill chicken as quick as possible as not to spread to the rest of the flock, then treat the sick chicken with antibiotics while monitoring the rest of the flock for symptoms. I wouldnt use an antibiotic as a preventative, only when absolutely needed or as a last resort.
