I just lost my polish rooster JJ today
I'd like to replace him some day maybe soon but not in a huge hurry. The next bird has big shoes to fill. LOL

anyhoo I've been looking online and seems there are many types of Polish or at least lots of names.

can anyone fill me in ???

Sylvia

Are you asking for the color names?

For example : silver laced black polish - white laced buff polish - white crested black polish ???

This is one that I rehomed last month. His name is/was Elvis and he was a soprano.

He is a 10 month old silver laced black polish cockeral.

I don't now how big the shoes are you have left to fill. As far as size goes there are many roosters much bigger than the polish.

Yes I guess I'm talking about color

Also it doesnt have to be a huge bird just lots of personality

This is a pic of my JJ

He died last night

what was he called??

LOL

YUP I've since learned he was a she.
I lost track of this thread, sorry would have posted it sooner.

I got the bird from a friend who was moving and she told me she was a HE so I not knowing much about the breed or chickens took her word for it. I guess thats what she was told too. I think she said he was a rescue.

anyhoo....

I've done some reading up on the subject" polish"

and found that all the names are colors.
I'm grasping the color thing but whats the buff thing? what does that mean?

Second: If I wanted to buy a nice bird what would anyone suggest I do?

Should I buy online? or try to buy in person. I dont know that I will find a breeder around here. I live in florida brevard county thats the east central coast.

I found a site that sells them but I'm hesitant to buy because of some of the threads I've been reading seem to suggest that there are some bad breeders out there that wont give you a good representation of the breed. I'm not looking for a show bird but would like something very pretty.

Third: if I buy online live chicks, am I to expect some loss when they arrive? or not?

Fourth: I read somewhere were you have to inoculate your birds against disease can someone point me in the right direction for keeping a healthy bird. I ll take a thread or another site that I can read up on it.

And last but not least...........

Thank YOU

Sylvia

Sylvia,

Did you look at the for sale area of the polish breed site that I posted for you? I also will have white crested eggs, that I can send you. I don't sell chicks, yet
hmm.png
PM me for more info.

Oh yes I went to that site you suggested and I love that site. Good choice. I 've since learned much.
thank you thank you.

I also contacted about 3 sellers of chicks. haven't heard back from any yet.

Now you say you have eggs.
I'm not experienced enough to know how to hatch one nor do I have a set up for them.

I just owned a beatuful Polish ( hen I guess, LOL ) and was so in love with her and just lost her. I'd like to get another polish if they breed is anything like she was. She was friendly and followed me everywhere.
She let me pick her up ate from my hand came to the back door when I called her for her afternoon snack. She was great!!

She was given to me by someone who had rescued her and after a while found out she had to move and couldnt keep her. ( note we thought she was a rooster)

I thought why not help a friend out and make a new one, being he doesn't crow, LOL we thought he hadn't figured it out yet. Rotf when all along he was a girl.
So I took him in and some how he was attacked by the dog in the middle of the night. I think she roosted on the ground and he got a hold of her.

Soooooooooooo needles to say I know nothing about the breed, how to buy one, where to buy one, whats a good bird vs a bad bird, I know nothing except I know how to give LOTS of Luvvvvv

oh oh can I tell you a quick story???
ok ok I know this thread is lasting for ever and I'm starting to ramble,LOL I have that habit. Sorry

Ok this is my story:

When I was about 5 years old, I lived in the projects of Brooklyn (We're talking the late 60's early 70's)

I'm hispanic and in our culture we like to have lots of fresh meat and veggies.

Well as a kid my mom used to go down town and get fresh chickens from the market. I mean fresh. You go down pick out your bird they kill it cut it , bag it and give it to you.

Well one day we went down and picked out a bird( that was always my fav part looking at the birds and picking out the prettiest one)

Little did I know what they did with them except the took it out back and came back with a nicely wrapped brown bag for my mom.

On this day the back door was open and I saw a bird on the " chopping block and the man holding my bird to be next!!!

I freaked out and threw myself on the floor and sayiing dont kill my chicken. I went on and on until my mom finally said, just put him in a bag I'll take him home. LOL
So we took him home and he lived in our bathroom in the projects of Brooklyn until the neighbors couldnt take the crowing anymore and we had to get rid of him.

but I guess since a young child I've had a love for them and all animals.

and thats my story. = )

And now I want another one!! ROTF

So I need Chicken 101

Can I hatch an egg on my own? do I need special equipment?

if I ordered the 25 chicks ( i know that site ) how do house that many chicks ( I would sell some of course) but would need to find housing until then. Whats the set up I would need? to have healthy safe chicks

Ok next how much should I expect to pay for a bird? or a chick?

and what the heck is a

Bantams and whats buff face mean
and what does bearded mean???

I've tried to read up on it but its hard to find out.

someone fill me in.

ok I'm shutting up now ..........

Ok...I will try to answer your questions. I have copied your last post and I am going to put the answers to your questions, after the question. The best thing you could do is search for the standard on Polish and read up on it. You can buy the book from the American Bantam Assosiation-do a google search)

Now you say you have eggs.
I'm not experienced enough to know how to hatch one nor do I have a set up for them. (You have to set up an incubator to hatch eggs)

Soooooooooooo needles to say I know nothing about the breed, how to buy one, where to buy one, whats a good bird vs a bad bird, I know nothing except I know how to give LOTS of Luvvvvv
(If you are looking for a good bird with as close to the standard in quality, find a breeder on the site I gave you. Email them and they can help you out. A good bird will cost you around $20-up plus shipping to your home)

if I ordered the 25 chicks ( i know that site ) how do house that many chicks ( I would sell some of course) but would need to find housing until then. Whats the set up I would need? to have healthy safe chicks
(You would need to build a pen. They would need protecction from the elements and preditors. Mine have a 40X40 area that they free range in)

Bantams and whats buff face mean
and what does bearded mean??? (Bantam is a small version of the large fowl. Bearded means just that, they have a beard)
