Can I give my 7 week old chicks poultry grit?

If you get a small bag of chick grit, I know i the amount is more than your current chicks will need, but it will keep for years. Considering 'chicken math' you will use it for next years' chicks, the next, etc. I'm on my third batch of chicks in 3 years, and still using the original bag of chick grit. My daughter bought parakeet grit for her chicks, but I've read here on BYC that parakeet grit is too fine for chickens. If so, sand definitely is as well.
