Can i keep a 4 month old cockerel with its mum and 1 other hen long term?

Dad rooster recently got kille by a snake and only have the mum hen and her sister left along with one of their babies.

Probably a dumb question but i dont know much about chickens.

Sorry that I am not able to answer your question but as we are not allowed to keep roosters, I have no experience with them. However, someone else will be along shortly and hopefully able to advise.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Yes you should be able to keep him with them no problem but I would suggest adding more to the flock when you can.

You can even breed him to them(it's called line breeding) but will eventually have to add new blood.

A rooster can handle ten hens. Two hens would be much too little for him, they would be getting seriously overbred, and physically damaged. I don't think you want to add eight more hens to please him.
