Can I keep california quail with coturnix?

Hi Everyone! New here, first post (!)

I am building a L8'xW4'xH6' aviary for my quail and I'm planning on getting 6 celadon, 6 coturnix and want to add 3 california valley (all chicks). Can I keep all these quails together if they are all raised together from a few weeks old?

Old world and new world quail are different species. If you have enough space, you might be able to get away with it, but you might not.

Thank you for your reply! I will have to look into the different characteristics of each species. What would you consider "enough space"? The coop is L8'xW4'xH6' and about 36 square feet after hides/feeders/water are added.

That might be enough to mix half a dozen birds or so. I'm thinking large aviary. @muddy75 mixes birds in her setup, but even she gets her share of casualties.

The 15 should be good in that space and if raised together they should get along just fine. You may still end up with extra males in the coturnix that have to be removed from the equation as the celadon colors may be vent sexable only after 5 weeks.

I️ know this is a late reply, but I️ think I’ll be helpful. I️ have a male California quail that I️ hand raised from a chick last year in July who was alone and very people oriented. I eventually wasn’t able to take him with me everywhere, so I️ had to get him a buddy. I️ picked up 2-3 week old Coturnix hens in Late October or early November. One hen unfortunately was prey to a hawk. As of now, Both of the quail are very fond of each other and are always together. Whenever I️ separate them, they both call out for each other nonstop. Currently they are both adoptive parents of 6 chicken chicks that are 2 weeks old have been with them since day 1.

I️ am going to go off topic to say that I️ am amazed by how caring and thoughtful the California quail are. I️ never thought integrating my chicks with the quail would actually work. I️ am most surprised by the fact that My male Cali quail has more maternal instincts than my female Coturnix quail who lays eggs almost everyday.

I don't know about California Quail and Coturnix, but I have kept Northern Bobwhites and coturnix together and it worked out fine. At first the bobwhites were TERRIFIED of the coturnix quail but eventually they got along. And mine weren't raised as chicks together. I would think that you should be able to mix Cali Quail and coturnix fine, especially if they were raised together. Good luck!

My California quail are not aggressive but they are way more active and spooky than my bobs and coturnix.They will run around that pen in no time and if able to fly will smack into those walls.I keep mine in a lower pen to keep them from flying.

Wanted more but hard to find
Very happy with quails doves finches and budgies lol
