Hello,
I was thinking of possibly getting a silkie chicken to put in with my delaware, ameracauna, austrolop, brahma, and sex link. Is this ok to do????? And are they good egg layers? My chickens are about 12 weeks old. I do not know much about silkies except they are cute and lay small eggs.

There are several threads on this board about Silkie crosses. They are very interesting and cute when they are crossed. So apparently it is done. I have just gotten a Silkie rooster and he will be the rooster for my flock, and as you can see by my signature, I have quite a variety and should get some great crosses when I'm ready to let some eggs hatch.

Also, I did rehome my full size mutt rooster. He was too big and I was really afraid he was going to hurt my silkie. Silkie rooster is better out there I think.

Good luck, and do a search on here for "Silkie Crosses" you will enjoy the pictures!

I better clarify my question. I do not want to breed the silkie with my others, I just want to make sure they will get along. They are all hens.

They should get along fine if they all put into the pen at the same time, or if they are free rangeing they should get along fine. Of course they are like alot of humans sometimes and will fuss among themselves.

My silkie does fine with all of my other chickens. I have Serama Bantams, my silkie, 2 ameraucanas, 1 australorp, 1 buff orpington, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Silver Laced Wyndotte, and 1 Cuckoo Marans ... they all get along fine. Mine is funny because she is blue and the ameraucanas are blue, and they all are bffs

One of the ameraucanas tries to snuggle under Flo (silkie) to sleep at night. They're always together, except if treats are going round, then it's every chicken for itself.

aww, I see. Yes, mine actually is top dog in the pen and gets a long good with everyone, unless they do something annoying. Although she is the littlest, she is top of the pecking order.

Silkies are not good layers. They go broody a lot and if you want one mainly for eggs they aren't a good choice but if you want one for a pet go for it.

You might want to consider getting two (or more) adding new chickens is easier if there is more than one for the flock to focus it's attention on. I recently intergrated three Silkies into my main pen and they like to stick toghther. Do watch how the other girls act, some chickens find the fluffy feathers interesting and peck them. Also check the Silkie's eyes aren't hidden behind fluff, if they are carefully trim it out of the way. I didn't have this problem but some do and you want them to be able to see well so they can get away from the other girls if they are pecking at them.

Have fun with your chickens.
