Can I move the babies out now?

Mine are 4 weeks, but they are outside with a heat lamp still. Actually, it's way to warm for them, but I can't raise the lamp anymore and I don't have one with lower wattage. Plan on working on that tomorrow.

Mine just got moved out into the chicken tractor with a light because it is cold outside. They went out at 3 1/2 weeks the sides are coverd in plexi glass.

I've been wondering about this too.

Mine are 6 weeks old and I'm thinking they have to start going out this weekend. It was 42 degrees today. So I'll try the lamp. And then gradually take it away? I do want them to get used to the weather in these here parts.

But - do you worry about fire with the lamp?

They should be fine. I usually put mine out at 6 weeks without heat.

Sometimes I think more harm is done to them by keeping them under heat for too long. I think protecting them from drafts and cold winds is more important than the heat lamp. I'm talking about when they are feathered out (which I think they do quicker without too much heat)....not new chicks!!

I got a 110 gallon water troft at the co-op for $60.00 and put my 13 chickies out in the shed with 2 heat lamps hanging on a stick from the rafters. (I'm down to 11 now, 2 got trampled on by the bigger chicks one of which was my UNO that I hatched)

I have a screen door covering it and it's weighted down with 4 2x6's on top of it to keep them in and everything else out. My chickies are about 3 and 4 weeks old now and they have been out there for about a week to 10 days now. We just moved down here to Alabama this summer from Alaska and just bought a house last week.

We should be moving into the new house a couple days after Thanksgiving and when we do I will need to make a small (temparary) coop real quick to put them in so I can go back down to Tupelo and get about 20 more little chickies from Mandy. Then I will start working on a couple of permanent coops to put them in.
This is the first time I have ever had chickens and it is so much fun.
