I'm new to chickens, and have been doing a ton of research since starting this adventure- and so much is conflicting.
At first I added fresh grass clipping in the run, since we have plenty, but then stopped because I read about the crop impaction issue. But one day I was watching them and a couple specifically reached for a green piece among the dry pieces, leaving the rest alone. I could see how too much cut green grass might be a problem.
So now I have been adding only dried grass clippings to the run. I notice that none of the girls are interested in eating it. But they do like scratching it around to find bugs and scratch grains. It keeps the run drier and I'll have nice compost for the garden when I gather it up. Win-win.
