Of course, they look nothing like that now! Those aren't all of them, but a good representation.

We also used antique windows in the coop. Unfortunately, we had to buy the framing and inside walls materials. I'll post pix of the finished coop later on.

I think you lucked out with a straight run batch. The middle one looks like a roo to me, all the others look like girls!

My kids named my pekin duck Hank when it was a fuzzy little baby... Hank has been laying me wonderful eggs for a month now. I don't think she cares that her name is Hank!!

I thought you'd like to see what I ended up with. The chicks turned out to be 2 females and 3 males, one of which is going to live with a friend tomorrow. He's a real character and I'll miss him. I'll keep the biggest male, "Roo", and butcher the smallest when it's time.

I love the Barred Rocks. They have great personality, are smart and quick and forage like there's no tomorrow. Great breed and I'll probably get more.

Barred Rocks are easy to sex once you know what to look for. Miss Prissy taught me that! The males are lighter overall than the females, almost silver. Forget the head spots, comb and leg color--it's not reliable. Body color is very reliable. Note how dark she is.

The other pullet, Sweet Pea, is also a wonderful little girl. I don't have an updated photo of her yet.

Roo, two weeks ago and yesterday. He's a nice boy and I think he'll make a quiet yet alert rooster. Note the much lighter color overall. You can see this difference at a very early age too.

If you don't have Barred Rocks, you owe it to yourself to give them a try. I have yet to see any of the males peck at the females, unlike my Orpingtons and Australorps who are already acting like roosters. If Roo continues to be a sweetie, he'll stay.
