Can I paint my roosts?

I'm wondering if I can paint my roosts. I'm hoping to use some wood stain and sealant I have. Can I, or is it just a bad idea?

I painted mine with a high-gloss latex, and so far it seems to make it easier to clean them.

I painted my roosts 2.5 years ago with primer and two finish coats of exterior paint. The chickens have worn all the paint off from their movement.
