I ordered more chicks today, and am wondering if I can put them under a hen if I get one that goes broody when the chicks come? I read you can put them under the hen in the dark, but don't know how to go about it. If I get lucky and a hen is broody when they come can I move the hen into the coop I plan to put the chicks in? I have buff orpington and sussex hens that have started to go broody ,but I took all the eggs as it is very cold yet in Mi.

I would not do that. If, and theres a real big chance of this happening... she doesn't accept them, she'll kill them. I'd just keep them in a brooder.

If she's been on the nest for close to three weeks, there is a better chance she'll accept them, but you would have to watch her very carefully.

I've done it a couple of times successfully, but I scheduled the arrival of the chicks to coincide with the broody's eggs hatching. If you give her chicks before her own eggs hatch, she'll likely abandon the eggs she's on.
