Can i sprinkle grit on their food?

I put it right with the food. And they eat it...

But I also have a seperate dishes that has grit/sand/oyster shells in them. And they eat this too...

I don't notice any one dish being eatten out of more. I think it's actually more for my satisfaction than the birds....
