Can I switch to layer feed early?

My chickens are almost 5 months so I bought layer feed a little bit ago in anticipation of them laying eggs by the time I ran out of the grower feed. Unfortunately I'm almost out of grower feed and still no eggs...I'd rather not buy a 50 lb bag of grower just to have them start laying soon after...is it ok to start them on layer a little early?

Mine have been on layer crumbles since I got them at about 12 weeks because that's all I could get organic. My understanding is it has a bit more calcium, which can't be a bad thing if they're getting ready to lay. I hear it isn't good on little chicks, but your adolescents will be fine.

Mine are about the same age as yours. The anticipation is killing me!
