I'm a newbie hatching for the first time. My daughter would like to take some of the baby chicks into her class to show her friends. Can we do that safely?

ask the school... most schools are all for it...

make sure there is a place for hand washing before and after chicks

I would also wait till they are at least a week old before you take them on their first car adventure

I would wait till they were a few days old. And I would closely monitor, as kids aren't always as gentle as we'd like them to be. But last year a little boy in my class brought a chick in (his mom brought it) for the kids to see. They loved it. I had them sit in a circle on the floor, and he took it around to everybody, and even put it down for a walk around inside the circe (had to remind kids to sit still so no accidents happened and so we didn't scare the little thing).

I have taken 1 week old chicks (and our house bunnies) into our church on the day they have the kids Easter egg hunt. I set up like a little petting zoo. I take a heat lamp to keep the chicks warm. I put them in a large plastic tote while at church. I do let some of the older kids hold them but they have to sit on the floor while holding them. I take several containers of hand sanitizer. I require everyone, including all adults, that touched the chicks to use the hand sanitizer before they walk away. The chicks are very popular and we get Thank You notes. Even the pastors thank us.

We might have to get more chicks again next year even though I have no idea where I will put them after they grow up. My two coops and the run will be full after this years chicks are moved outside. We currently have 15 1 year old hens and 25 chicks in the brooder. (I think 3 of the chicks are roosters and they will most likely be rehomed in a few weeks.)

I brought two of ours into my son's 1st grade class. It was fine. The only thing that went wrong was that my son and I each held one instead of leaving them in the container I brought them in, and we let them walk on the floor a bit. They pooped on my son and on the floor. So I was scrubbing the carpet with soap and antibacterial stuff! The kids loved it, though. Lots of handwashing, and don't let the kids swarm the chicks or they'll get nervous.

Well,, we have chicks in our class right now! Two hatched two days early! I'll bet the kids would love to see them!!

Ask the teacher. I took my older son's 4H chicks in to his brother's class the day we picked them up. I just had the rule that I was the only one that held them (5-6 year olds

) and I left the rest in the box closed so they'd stay warm. Didn't keep one out too long, answered questions and then left. They loved it.

The teacher is thrilled to have them since they are currently teaching about farm animals.

I've waited until the chicks were at least a week old and plan on taking them in a plastic tub. They will be away from home for less than an hour....do you think I need to bring the heat lamp to set up there?
