This is my first hatch! And today is day 21. I had 2 chicks hatch on the 19th day. They are making a mess!!! Now i have 11 chicks and 2 or 3 trying to hatch!!! They are messing with them and they step on them! Can i take the dryest chicks out and put them in the brooder if i spray warm water in there?
Thanks,

Chicken Girl

I did, mine were picking at the new ones belly buttons. I took them out fast, putting them in a small bin for transport to the brooder. do i fast is the bigest thing. can you keep humidity in when u open it? I have a small door in mine. Hopefully you don't let too much out. someone else may yell at me about saying this........ just so you know

lol thats all right. i have opend the bator many times in the past 2 days to spray warm water in there and the hum is up to 75%. So i dont know.

When I've felt like I need to open the incubator, I take the whole thing to the bathroom, turn the hot shower on, and let it get super steamy. (turn the vent fan off)

Then I quickly get the job done, and throw in a shot of hot water before I close it back up. This seems to work fine, just be as quick as possible.

This is exactly what I do!!! It works great!!! It gets or keeps the humidity up and I also crank a small room heater in the bathroom! Whe filled with steam you can turn off the shower but leave the heater cranked! Its the sudden drop in temp that kills! The humidity will stay high enough after the steam! When I get out of the bathroom I look like I was in the shower! LOL I am soaking wet! (steam and Heat) I remove all the empty shells and chicks add water if needed and then replace the bator back to its usual spot. I have done a 6 set staggerd hatch and didn't lose a single chick. I opened the bator several times. The hatches were any where from a day to a week apart. I was hatching for almost 2 weeks straight non stop!

Good Luck and God Bless!

PS. ONLY remove dry fluffy chicks!!! If they are still wet they will get cold and die! If they are a lil damp You can dry with a warm blow dryer before removing from the bathroom!

Hi chicken girl!! We're hatching to for the first time. I've been having the same problem and for some reason my eggs are taking their sweet little time hatching. I'm on day 24 with 2 more eggs trying to hatch. So I've been having to get in there and remove chicks. Everyone is right if you do it fast and in a steamy area if possible you shouldn't have any problems. But if you can't do it some where steamy then spray a lil warm water on the eggs and add a shot of hot water in the bottom to bring things back up. Hope things work out for you.

Just wanted to say thanks for helping me out with the problems I've run into. I've taken advise from both of you and it's helped out wonderfully!!

Okay, I am not always right but with my first three hatches I worried and tried to do EVERYTHING by the book and did not have much success. I do not have many hens so the hatch I am doing now is a staggering hatch. I am opening the bator every day and putting one or two eggs in. So a chick is hatching just about every day. As soon as the chick dries I take it out. I am having a 100% hatch rate for the FIRST TIME! I am still opening the bator to hand turn each day. Don't know ,but it is working for me. Having fun too!

Sometimes I think we worry to much. I cannot say this will work for everyone but it is working for me. My hen does not go into LOCKDOWN and not get off of the nest for 3 days. The hen does not turn the humidity up when eggs are ready to hatch. The hen was off the nest for a really long time the other day and it was cool out so i was concerned, Went to the barn Easter morning and 2 chicks!

Just trying to help ease your mind. Not everyone will agree but others on BYC are doing staggering hatches and having success. I hope you have
the greatest first hatch ever!

Ok i did it! the temps stayed the same and so did the hum!!! I just turnd the temp up a lil and sprayed warm water in there enery time i opend it! I hope the rest hatch!!!
Thanks all!
