I've got a big zinc-coated metal tub that I thought I might use for a brooder, but I'm wondering if perhaps the heat lamp might make the metal too hot. What do you think?

I would set it up and watch the temperature of the metal, you certainly do not want them getting too hot. I would think that the metal could get pretty hot, esp around the heat light itself.

I've got one of those. Its okay as long as you keep enough shavings in the bottom of it. I line the bottom of mine with plastic then put the shavings on it. That way the tub is easier to clean & it doesn't get hot.

your talkin about a water trough then yes, i have used 1 many times

Okay, well I'll just set it up and test it out first before the chickies come home. It's going to be a chore to haul it out from under the deck and scrub it, so I wanted to ask first!

Our TSC uses the metal tubs for their chicks.
