Can I use a green light rather than a red light?

Hello everyone;
First time hatcher here. We had 17 hatch out of 21. 5 were our eggs, the rest were shipped. We had an 86% hatch rate. Thanks to everyone here!!!! ooops, son just reminded me it was 18 hatch:)

Tonight they're in the brooder. We don't have a red light bulb, but I have a green 65 Watt floodlight. Will this work in place of the red light? Right now I have a white light on them, 100W (and a heating pad underneath if they want to lay on that too).

I always use red lights and I always will... I think I heard white lights keep them up, and it makes them peck at each other. (i don't know though) I dont know what to say about a green light. I would try to get a red light if possible.

Hope I helped!

I've used green & white. Never had a problem. Just remember that it is for heat so make sure that your flood light gives off heat-I know that some of mine don't but I'm in a different country.

I use a white light and a black light at night. I think green would be ok. The only time I have ever had pecking problems is the first day and then it happens even with red bulb. I think green would be ok for now.

Thank you for your replies. I am not going out until tomorrow, so unfortunately, I won't be able to get one tonight. I have a 25W red, but I don't think that would make it hot enough?

Israel: The top country I would LOVE to visit some day. Thank you, I will try the green (and make sure it is hot enough). I guess the chicks will let me know if they're not happy.

i always use a red light too and i remember something from a long time ago except i can't remember wher i heard it....
when using light for heat for animals it should be red because something to do with the way they perceive the light... red is calming( for lack of a better word) and they still sleep and it does not interfere with their cycles
a white light will make them aggresive and if i had to sleep under an interogation light i'd be a pickin a few fights myself

as for a green light i've never heard of that being used but i agree that you should go with the red one

I now use a Blue light. I have find it calm them more then the red. I even use them for heat at night when it is really cold for my grown chickens. It is more like moon light and they can sleep when left on. Floadlights 100watt from Home Depot and 95watt from City Electric.

The white will be ok , untill you can get a red one, the green would work except to low of a watt.

Yes white light keep them awake longer, and they get bored and start pecking the other, red or green will be more like dark, not 24 hr of daylight.

A few days of white ok that first few weeks.

We used the green last night and it really did seem to 'calm' them. The light was not enough to keep them warm on its own, but with the electric heating pad underneath on low, it worked really well!

Thanks for your help and comments.

My brooder box is a homemade wooden box that measures 2 ft by 3-1/2 ft by 2 feet tall and has insulated walls and floor. I have 2 lights in it. The first one is a 75 watt flood light that is connected to a dimmer switch so I can turn it up and down. The second is a white 40 watt that puts out no heat.

With the 75 watt flood light I can raise or lower the temp all the way up to about 140 degrees F so you do not have to those big wattages just for heat. It really depends on your brooder.

Hope this is helpful.
