I started with an axe (machete) and worked up to the kill cone. I found for me it was psychologically easier for the first few to use the axe, as it was over faster and I didn't have to think about it as much. Once I got more comfortable with the process I "moved up" to kill cones and cutting the arteries instead. I do think I get a better bleed out from the kill cone method.
I don't agree that the bird flops around less with kill cones; not at all. Just the reverse, in fact. I have a lot of trouble with my birds thrashing really hard and backing fully out of the kill cones. I've started tying them in with a bungie, which I hate because it scares them. With the axe its one stroke and a few shudders and its done.
