Hi All,
I'm trying to figure out if its ok to use the pine shavings from my chicks, who are fed medicated feed, on my veggie garden.
Anyone know?
THANKS, Shana

I'm not sure what is in "medicated" feed for chicks but I would have to say its probably not a good idea.
And the pine shavings are not good for most garden crops unless they have composted and started to decay. Otherwise you will burn your plants and see a huge decrease in growth and yeild.

If you need an anti fungal or anti bacterial in the garden, try these:

Homemade Garden Pesticide
  1. To make a spray for getting rid of aphids, whiteflies, and similar garden pests, puree 8 to 10 cloves of garlic in a blender with 1 tablespoon vegetable or mineral oil. I use the coffee grinder to fine grind the cloves and toss them into my stainless steel mortar and pestle.
  2. Strain the mixture through a sieve into a quart storage jar. Add 3 cups hot water and a teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap. Cap the jar and shake to mix thoroughly.
  3. Decant the mixture into a spray bottle and spray the affected plants, making sure to cover both sides.
Homemade Garden Fungicide -
  1. To control fungal diseases, such a powdery mildew and black-spot mix one teaspoon of baking soda in one quart warm water.
  2. Add one teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap.
  3. Apply to leaves as a spray or drench the leaves of smaller plants with watering can.

Slug Baiting the easy no mess way -
  1. One medium sized tin can with a lid. One smaller sized tin can that nests within the medium sized can. A wire hanger and Beer.
  2. For the inside can punch holes in the bottom and sides to create a sieve. Also make sure to punch an easily accessible hole about ½” in diameter just under the lip of the can.
  3. Counter-sink tin cans in the garden.
  4. Bait them with beer. Slugs are drawn to beer, fall in, and don’t get out.
  5. Twist open the coat hanger and fashion one end into a ‘hook’. Use this to lift the inner can out so you can toss the slugs out onto the compost pile.
  6. During the day you will want to put the ‘medium’ outside can’s lid on to prevent attracting wasps and keep your chickens out of it.
  7. Replenish the beer as needed in the evenings when pulling the caps.

I think that if the medication is amprolium (coccidiostat) then it's probably safe to use the manure in the compost. There are also medicated feeds that contain antibiotics (Bacitracin, I think), and that kind I'm not so sure about.
