Can I use my shredded paper as nesting material ?

It doesn't matter if it is used for bedding or in the nest, wet, muddy feet causes the paper to get matted up. My chickens free range and when they come out of the coop/run it is stuck on their feet then it comes off in my yard and looks like I have trash flying around. My shredded paper is used for the chicks for a brief time then it goes into the compost pile. I use shavings for the base then straw. My chooks like it better. Again, just my opinion.

The short term cost savings of using cheap or free shredded newspaper will be quickly lost when you have broken or dirty eggs due to the matting of the material. It is not dense or thick enough to provide suitable nesting material.

the secret to clean eggs is to have clean bedding before they go into the nest..

To me, if it gets matted, that would mean that it is absorbant.
maybe it woud be a good idea to mix it with straw??

I just had the same idea! What I also found out that works is having their nests at 4 to 5ft high and have rests leading up so their feet would be dryer when they reach it. Plus it is a bonus that I don't have to bend over every day to gather eggs.... That can cause wear and tear on your joints if you were older. :old:  :th: My chickens have fun jumping up too!!! Good to exercise also.
