I asked for chicken grit from the local feed store and they ordered pigeon health grit for me to use. It is red and has a strange odor. What makes it red and can I give it to 4 week old chicks? Thanks in advance.

The Red pigeon grit is actually better for them than the chick grit.

I googled this little gem about it
"APC Health Grit - A blend of nine hard and
soft grits, with added iodine--graded, washed,
and free of fungal and bacterial infections. Developed by Dr. Colin Walker, the "Flying Vet." (Australian Pigeon Company)"

I think the red is from the iodine [IMG] and I've read that the iodine is very good for them.
