Can movement inside egg be from infection?

So, this morning I heard a few peeps- so it's a bird in there. The pip is not really bigger, maybe a tiny bit but still no hole or anything. Not as much progress as I would typically expect to see in 18 hours.

I feel like he is going to be too weak to hatch given the circumstances, but I'm hesitant to intervene since I don't know what day he's on. If I help him out and he hasn't absorbed the yolk I'll feel terrible. Guess we'll just see what happens today!

they say not to help...but I helped 3 of my chicks this week....if they pipped but hadn't progressed in hours, I gently broke through the shell just a bit, so you can see its beak....give it a while and wait...if nothing, gently crack the shell do NOT remove the membrane! I had to actually remove the entire thing off of 2 of mine, they bled badly, but are fine now..they would not have survived if I had not helped...I now have 5 fluffy chicks....good luck!!

So unfortunately I had to come to work, but I just got a text from my husband that the egg hatched and there is a chirping zombie chick sitting in the incubator. I want to ask him if it seems to be weird looking or disabled from its magical adventures in resurrection, but honestly he is not a chicken nerd and wouldn't know what to look for so I didn't bother. I will post photos and an update in a couple of hours when I get home.

I have had dozens and dozens of chickens but this is hands-down the wackiest chicken experience I've ever had. I'm still scratching my head over all of it.

That's awesome! Are you going to tell the lady about it? I'm curious what she would say...she probably has a sneaky broody chicken that is getting frustrated that her eggs keep getting taken...

Okay, so here's the little guy 12 hours later. He is really tiny but otherwise seems fairly typical. One of his extra toes has another toe growing sideways out of it.. so that's.. special.

I still have him in the incubator, but I'll move him to a brooder today and I think then it will be easier to tell if he's acting normally or not.

Still can't believe he's alive!

Really cute Silkie baby! And, extra toes on the extra toes a pretty normal, though not desirable for showing.

I read a story here on BYC where another member, for reasons I can't recall now, pitched some eggs into their compost bin and had one hatch! Glad your little survivor pulled through!
