Can my rooster eat egg laying hen food?

I’ve had rhode island reds in the past and they didn’t live long either I’m not sure what is happening to them.

Bummer! I had some RIR hens that didn’t last long, too. I have two RIR pullets now - will be 1 year old at the end of the week. Hoping they make it longer than the others. The only hen I’ve got left from that first batch is my Barred Rock, Alice. She just turned 7 in March :love .

I'm with everyone else. I give my chickens all-flock and supplement with oyster shell and their cleaned and crushed eggshells.

My rooster is the first one at the eggshells when I refill the dish but I guess he knows what he needs.

I know right! Tractor supply has it for only 19 dollars.

I wasn't aware of this we probably have a rooster in our group. We already bought layers feed. A 40lb bag would it be ok for him to have this till this bag is gone?

When we made the switch, we mixed the layer feed half-and-half with the all-flock until the layer feed was all gone. It just seemed wasteful to dispose of it, as we had just bought a new bag when we learned it wasn't good for the non-layers, and it seemed like mixing it might make it less harmful than feeding it straight. I don't know if others would agree, but that's what we did.

Thank you. 🙂
