Can niacin deficiency cause permanent lameness?

If niacin deficiency is not caught early enough can it cause permanent lameness even with treatment? Was late catching it in one of my males and have been treating him for weeks with niacin pills at first, then switched to b complex with seemingly very little to no improvement.

Yes, it can cause permanent damage. But don't give up.
This was my biggest fear when my girlie Sprightly had a niacin deficiency. I didnt catch it until the point where she was unable to walk without tripping up. She was losing her appetite, always sleepy, and couldnt even swim properly.

It took pretty much constant treatment until she was pretty much fully grown. Shes just fine now. Strong, healthy, great swimmer and waddler.

What B complex is it? Is it the durvet one? What dose are you giving? What dose did you give of the niacin capsules, and were they flush effect or flush free?

The niacin capsules were flush effect and I started off giving him about half of a 500 mg pill, then after that didn’t seem to be working I upped it to the whole pill(but some of it would end up falling off the treat before he ate it), so it was just under the whole pill that he actually ate.

Oh, okay. 1ml a day b complex is perfect, you should see improvement soon. What feed is he on, and how long exactly has it been since starting treatment?

How long has he been on the B complex? With a severe deficiency your ducks body not only has to build back up it's vitamin stores, but get it to a level where it can be maintained on its own. This process can takes many weeks to months depending on how severe the case.

If I am reading correctly the niacin pill were NOT flush free that you used? If so I would not count those days as treatment. The flush pushes out the niacin before it can be used by your ducks body. Yes, flushing niacin works for ducks; flush-free does not. Flushing niacin is often hard to find.
