i am not sure if this is in the right place but.....I let my chickens free range. We have had them for a year and they have never gotten off of our property....but now they are going into the neighbors yard. The neighbors say they dont mind but i am worried about them eating something that may be poisoionus...for example rat poision or fertilizer or such. It worries me that if it is something that doesnt kill them will anything poisionus be passed through to the egg to where it can make us sick. We give a lot of eggs away and i would hate anyone to be sick or worse.

I dont know for sure but i would say that if your concerned about that then maybe that should be a red flag. I think you have valid point though. I had that problem 8 or 9 years ago with my girls wandering. I eventually started letting them out later in the evening so they wouldnt have as much time to wander. Maybe throw some chix scratch in your yard to keep them busy close to home? just a suggestion.

I dont think i would want to eat the eggs to be honest.
Maybe ask the neighbor if there is anything they could get into of that nature. Also ask them if they want free eggs? haha and see what they say. Good luck

Thanks for the response...LOL they used to come to me when i called them and now they arent even doing that....I hate to have to keep them penned up but i may have to...letting them out later would be a good idea....i have about 40 acres they could run on and of course they go to the neighbors LOL...i have called my vet and i am waiting on him to call back so i will post his answer.

I think if your chicken eats rat poisoning, eating the eggs would be the least of your worries. Just ask your neighbours if they use any pesticides or pest control in their yard. That way you would know and can keep them in your yard.
